How long will my order take?
All custom order candles from Lights & Scents are poured at the time we receive your order. This does take some time, and orders are poured in the order they are received. We try our best to get your order to you within two weeks, however busy times like the holidays or larger order may take more time. If you are ordering for an event or wedding, we suggest that you allow approximately four weeks just to be safe.
If you are ordering already made candles that are in stock, your order will ship within two business days. However, if your order contains custom candles, all candles will be shipped together when your custom order is completed.
What if I want to place a custom order, but am concerned about getting my candles in time?

What type of wax do you use?
Lights & Scents uses only the finest paraffin wax that we hand blend with local beeswax. This makes our candles long lasting and strong smelling.
Do your wicks contain lead?
No. All of our wicks are either 100% cotton, or cotton with a stiff paper center. Wicks containing lead have been outlawed in the United States since the 1970s. The only time you should have to worry about lead in wicks is if you are purchasing candles made outside the United States.
I want to get the most out of my candle purchase. Do you have any tips?
We sure do! Here is a list of steps to take to ensure you get the most from your candles:
- The first time you light a pillar candle, burn it one hour for every inch of diameter. For container and votive candles, burn the candle long enough for the melted wax to reach the edge of the container. This will allow the pool of wax to extend to the outside rim, preventing your candle from forming a "tunnel" in its center. Burning your candle this way will also set its memory. Each time you re-light the candle it will "remember" to burn out to the rim. You can give your pillar candles a gentle "hug" when the wax is soft to encourage the rim to fold in towards the center.
- Keep your wicks trimmed, even during burning!! This is essential for a clean, smoke free burn. Many people complain about candles that smoke, this can be eliminated by trimming the wick to 1/4 inch every time that you burn the candle. The only exception to this rule is with our votive candles. We use a self trimming wick that will maintain a perfect length for burning. There is no need to ever trim our votive wicks.
- If your candle is smoking despite trimming the wick, check for debris in the melt pool and any drafts around the candle. If no debris or draft exists, extinguish the candle immediately. Trim the wick a little more and allow to cool before re-lighting. The smoking will stop. With quality candles, you should have no problems with smoking, but it is worth mentioning that scented candles will smoke more than unscented candles.
- When you burn a highly scented candle, sometimes "mushrooming" will occur on the wick. Treat this as a friendly reminder that it is time to trim the wick.
- Candles need to breathe. If you burn a candle in a small, closed room, it will likely smoke. Please keep the size of the room in mind when displaying your new candle.
- Never "blow out" a candle. Blowing will cause melted wax to splatter everywhere and cause the candle to drip and smoke. the best way to extinguish a candle is with a snuffer. If you do not own a snuffer, your candle can be extinguished by gently dipping the lighted wick into the pool of wax. Be sure to use a non-flammable object, and realign the wick once it is extinguished. Now is a good time to trim the wick, so that it is ready for re-lighting.
Do you have any safety tips to share?
Glad you asked! We do have some safety tips for you
- NEVER LEAVE A BURNING CANDLE UNATTENDED, OR BURNING WHILE YOU SLEEP!!! This is THE cardinal rule of candle burning.
- Our votives liquefy. Place them in a tight fitting holder. Straight sided shot glasses are perfect for this.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets. Keep wagging tails and curious whiskers in mind.
- To prevent smoking, trim wick to 1/4 inch prior to each use, and keep trimmed during burning.
- Keep wick centered.
- If candle smokes, extinguish, trim and re-light
- Keep debris out of candle, and keep candle out of drafts
- To prevent color fading, keep candle out of direct sunlight
- Extinguish by dipping wick in melted wax and repositioning. This will eliminate smoking
- If candle burns unevenly due to draft, reposition wick towards the higher side. If this causes dripping wax, extinguish, allow wax to cool and harden then re-light. The candle will eventually repair itself.
- Always burn candle on heat and flame resistant surface, and keep away from flammable materials
- Extinguish candle when 1/4 inch of wax is left in the bottom. DO NOT allow candle to burn down completely. THIS WILL CAUSE FIRE!!
